Planner pen portraits
Acknowledgements
These pen portraits are a composite typology produced on the basis of the characteristics, careers and expressed viewpoints of a larger group of planners from across the UK who participated in biographical interviews as part of the ESRC funded ‘Working in the Public Interest’ research project.
The interviews were conducted by the full WITPI team: Ben Clifford from UCL; Andy Inch, Jason Slade, Malcolm Tait and Matthew Wargent from the University of Sheffield; and Zan Gunn, Abigail Schoneboom and Geoff Vigar from Newcastle University.
We are very grateful to the anonymous interviewees for their time and participation in the project. The interpretation of the careers and viewpoints in these pen portraits is an amalgam of the original interview data and responsibility for this interpretation lies with Ben Clifford.
Final thanks to Rob Cowan for the illustrations in this booklet. Drawing on a longstanding engagement with the planning world, Rob has conjured-up a picture to represent each pen portrait and these help bring our characters alive.
